Clinical Practice

I have worked for over 15 years with individuals or couples experiencing sexual difficulties who have chosen to work with a psychosexual therapist to support them to understand, adjust to and / or resolve such difficulties.

My professional experience includes, but is not limited to working with: low sexual interest / desire, male and female sexual arousal difficulties, erectile dysfunction (ED), sexual pain, orgasm difficulties, ejaculation difficulties (rapid (PE) or delayed ejaculation) and those experiencing sexual fear or avoidance.

My clinical background in cancer care means I have specific research and clinical interest in working with people whose sexual lives and relationships have been adversely affected by illness and medical treatment(s).

I established the first psychosexual therapy clinic at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London (in 2010) dedicated to the support and management of people whose sexual lives and intimate relationships had been adversely affected by cancer and its treatment.

Alongside working in private practice, I practice as a psychosexual therapist and senior cancer nurse in both the NHS and charitable sectors and continue to raise professional awareness of the importance of sexual rehabilitation for those living with the impact of long-term conditions.

My Therapeutic Approach

In my psychosexual therapy practice I adopt a bio-psychosocial approach to the assessment and optimal management of sexual difficulties.

Psychosexual therapy explores the physical, psychological and relationship factors that may be contributing to an individual or couple’s sexual difficulties.

I mainly draw from evidence-based therapeutic strategies that include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), biomedical management (erectile dysfunction medication and devices, menopause and vaginal health strategies, sexual aids), psychoeducation and systemic couple therapy. As sexual difficulties may have an underlying physical health or medical cause for their development, with the client’s permission I work closely with GPs and appropriate medical specialists to ensure optimal management of sexual consequences of illness or treatment.

I recognise that talking about sex and sexual intimacy is challenging to many and aim to put clients and partners at ease through working in partnership to develop a supportive and effective therapeutic alliance. The aim is to construct a unique programme of therapeutic work and management strategies that will assist the individual or couple to overcome and / or adjust to sexual difficulties so that their optimal level of sexual well-being can be realised.
