What is Coaching?
Coaching can be defined as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential” (as defined by the International Coach Federation).
What does a Coach do?
A coach is someone who acts as your personal mirror – not someone who tells you what to do, but someone who asks the right challenging questions to help you uncover your own answers. The coach will help you reflect, commit to action, and create transformational changes in your life. Coaching also provides accountability because you set yourself an action plan at the end of every session.
Is Coaching for Me?
If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the following then coaching could be for you:
- Is imposter syndrome hindering your new promotion?
- Do you have no idea of your future vision for your career?
- Are you feeling miserable and unfulfilled in your current role?
- Do you have no work/life balance?
- Are you dreaming of more financial stability and freedom?
- Do you feel like you’ve fallen into a career that doesn’t fit your dreams?
- Are you feeling a lack of confidence?
- Do you doubt yourself at every step and lack the self-belief to make changes?
- Do you feel uncertain about what your purpose in life is?
- Do you find yourself feeling unchallenged and not reaching your potential?
Coaching will help you:
- Stop procrastinating and instead take action on your goals
- Find solutions to blocks that come your way
- Boost your inner confidence
- Decrease any imposter syndrome
- Stop getting distracted by misfit opportunities and put all your efforts and energies into the right path for you
- Narrow down your options and find a career that will make you really happy
- Find fulfilment, contentment, and happiness in all areas of your life, not just your professional life
- Successfully land your dream job, feel more confident in seeking a promotion, or change career direction entirely!
How does Coaching Work?
During your Initial Consultation session, we will discuss you and your situation and what specific challenges you are facing and how coaching can help you. We will also discuss what you can achieve through coaching, and we will talk about your goals and ambitions. Various frameworks and resources will be shared so you can decide what will best suit you. Six sessions over the course of three months are usually recommended for individuals to see the best results.
Emotional Intelligence Assessment and Coaching
What is Emotional Intelligence?
EQ-i 2.0 is the only scientifically validated diagnostic tool for measuring Emotional Intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence is a term that was first used in the early nineties by researchers John Mayer and Peter Salovey. In 1996, psychologist Daniel Goleman later developed and redefined this term in his book “Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ”.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is defined as the ability to identify, assess, and control one’s own emotions, the emotions of others, and that of groups.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is not a static ‘score’ and can be developed and strengthened over time if guidance and focused development is facilitated. It is a very beneficial tool for use in the workplace, and emotionally intelligent leaders are proven to be much more effective in the workplace; they are better at making decisions, listening, controlling impulsive reactions, defusing conflict and developing their teams.
Generating and harnessing the EQ-i components (self-awareness, self-regulation; motivation; empathy and social skills) can lead to a more empowered, resilient, optimistic and caring workplace.
Can I develop my Emotional Intelligence?
Yes, you definitely can! If you’re interested in learning more about your Emotional Intelligence and how you can develop it, you can take the EQ-i 2.0 assessment which complements coaching sessions. The assessment takes about 20 minutes to complete online. Once your results are processed, you will have a coaching session to review your results and look at what all the scores mean, how you can develop the different parts of your EI, and how this applies to real-life scenarios. There is the option to have follow-up coaching sessions afterwards.
Career Consulting
Career Consulting sessions are different to Coaching sessions because they are more ‘advice-giving’ sessions which are tailor-made to give you guidance around topics including:
- Identifying your strengths, talents & superpowers
- Personal brand and how to stand out from the crowd
- Clarifying the specifics of your ideal job/career
- Identifying your target companies
- Network building and job-hunting
- Creating a winning CV & LinkedIn profile
- Preparing for interview
Career Consulting sessions are usually an additional extra for individuals who have already had some coaching sessions.

👋 Welcome back to our `M` series! As April is #StressAwarenessMonth, this week at TEP, `M` is for Managing Stress.
While a little bit of pressure can help motivate us, too much stress and exposure for long periods of time can weigh us down and take a toll on our physical & mental health! 💛
This Stress Awareness Month, take time to notice how stress shows up for you. Remember, we also need to look out for the physical warnings, such as tense muscles, over-tiredness, headaches/migraines as well as emotional symptoms such as irritability or forgetfulness.
It`s important to know how to reduce stress and build resilience. We can`t make all the stress in our lives disappear, but learning coping skills can help make it easier to get through the stressful situations! 💛

Happy Monday everyone! This week, our `M` word is for Masking!
👤 Masking can be exhausting - constantly camouflaging traits to fit in and avoid judgement. For many neurodivergent individuals, it`s a survival strategy, but it often comes at the cost of mental and emotional wellbeing. Unmasking is a journey toward self-acceptance and authenticity and neurotypical people can play a huge role in lessening the load. Let`s create a world where everyone feels safe to be themselves! 💛

This week, `M` is for Maladaptive Thinking!
🧠 Maladaptive thinking can sometimes prevent us from making adjustments that are in our own best interest. Recognising these thought patterns is the first step towards change. By identifying and challenging these thoughts, we can start to reframe them with more balanced, helpful perspectives.
Small changes can make a big difference! 💫

Also known as “psychological flexibility”, mental flexibility is being fully aware of one’s thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations in the present moment, accepting them as they are without judgment, and then choosing to act in accordance with our values regardless of our current experience. 💬👁️❤️
In other words, being aware, open, and engaged.
Greater psychological flexibility is linked with higher wellbeing and lower stress, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Low flexibility is correlated with lower levels of mental health. 👌
Increasing psychological flexibility requires practice. By employing mindfulness techniques and metaphors, we can bring more mental flexibility into our everyday lives. 🧘🏽

🗓️ How long have you worked at TEP? - “Since the beginning of February 2025”
🤔 Why did you want to work at TEP? - “I wanted to work at The Edinburgh Practice because I was keen to work as part of a multidisciplinary team that prioritised providing high quality services with a client-centred approach.”
💬 What is your favourite quote? - “My favourite quote is “One man’s style must not be the rule of another’s.” from Emma by Jane Austen”
🍽️ What is your favourite restaurant in Edinburgh? - “My favourite place to eat out in Edinburgh is Makars Mash Bar.”
🧘♀️ What do you do to relax? - “To relax I read books (especially fantasy novels) and spend time with my pets.”

💊 Medication can sometimes help improve mental health. There are four main types:
1) Anti-depressants: for moderate to severe depression.
2) Anti-anxiety drugs (anxiolytics): to feel calmer and improve sleep.
3) Anti-psychotics: to reduce delusions, hallucinations, severe anxiety, and mania.
4) Mood stabilisers: to help with extreme mood swings, such as bipolar mania.
But how do we know when to take medication?
🥼Your doctor will discuss your symptoms, their severity, and the possible benefits and side-effects of medication. Medication often works best in combination with other treatments, like talking therapy. If medication is offered, you do not have to take it. You can always ask for alternative treatment options.
⚠️ However, stopping medication abruptly can be dangerous. Always consult your doctor first.
