Art Therapy

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process to help individuals express emotions, process experiences, and explore their inner world.

Art Therapy

Art therapy helps people of all ages explore emotions, reduce anxiety, and promote healing through creative expression. Art therapy is about the process, not the end product. It’s designed to help you express emotions and explore your inner thoughts in a safe, creative way.

How Art Therapy Works

Initial Assessment – Each session starts with a discussion of your current emotional or mental health challenges and goals.

Creative Exploration – You’ll engage in artistic activities like painting, drawing, or sculpting. These activities allow you to express emotions, thoughts, and experiences.

Reflection – After creating, you’ll explore your artwork with the therapist to gain insights and explore emotions in a non-judgmental setting.

Tailored to the needs of the client – Every session is designed to fit you or your child’s unique needs and therapy goals.

Art Therapy as a Holistic Approach

Art therapy works well as a standalone intervention, as well as alongside other therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), counselling, or even medication management. By offering a non-verbal way to explore emotions, it can help clients who may find traditional talk therapy difficult or overwhelming.

Art therapy is adaptable and can be tailored to each client’s individual needs and therapeutic goals. Whether it’s working with children, adults, or older adults, art therapy provides additional emotional insights and avenues for healing.

Art therapy is particularly helpful for addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, and cognitive decline. By integrating creative expression, it encourages emotional exploration in a way that can enhance other ongoing treatments.

Who can Benefit from Art Therapy?

  • Children and Adolescents- Helps young people process emotions, deal with behavioural challenges, and manage trauma in a creative way.
  • Adults – Supports individuals coping with stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma by providing a space for self-reflection and healing.
  • Older Adults – Especially beneficial for dementia patients, helping with cognitive function and memory recall while offering a calming outlet for expression.
  • Physical conditions – While art therapy focuses on emotional and mental health, studies have shown it can also benefit individuals coping with chronic illnesses by reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

Our Expertise

Art therapy can provide several benefits to adults and young people who may be experiencing emotional, behavioral or psychological challenges. Art therapy can support:

  • Emotional Expression – Art offers a way to express feelings that are difficult to put into words
  • Mental Health Support – Regular sessions can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma
  • Cognitive Stimulation – For older adults, art therapy can stimulate memory and cognition, especially for individuals with dementia
  • Self-Esteem Building – Encourages confidence and self awareness

❤️ We’re supporting Time to Talk Day! Talking about what is going on in our lives and feeling heard is crucial for wellbeing. Today is about everyone getting together to talk and listen.

🗣️Talking about mental health doesn’t need to be awkward. Everyone struggles with their mental health from time to time.

👂You don’t need to have all the answers to be a good listener. Sometimes a friendly ear and space to share is all someone needs.

🫶Open up, talk, and listen.

🌼 We’re supporting #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek with @_Place2Be! This year’s theme is ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’, encouraging self-discovery and growth.

💛 This week is all about helping young people speak up and feel empowered to talk about mental health. It is about how we can build our resilience by understanding ourselves and recognising our emotions. By understanding who we are, we can find out what makes us feel happy, sad, anxious, or scared - or even all of them at once!

Happy Friday, everyone! 🌟 This #fridaycheckin, we’re focusing on checking in with our sensory needs.

Did you know we have 5 main senses:
👁️ Sight
👃 Smell
👅 Taste
👋 Touch
👂Hearing
Plus two additional senses:
🧍‍♂️ Proprioception (body awareness)
⚖️ Vestibular (balance and movement)

Sensory needs can vary, we can be:
* Hypersensitive: Easily overwhelmed for example by bright lights, loud noises, or strong smells
* Hyposensitive: May seek extra stimulation for example from strong flavours or textures

Tuning into and meeting our sensory needs helps to soothe the nervous system, promotes wellbeing and reduces distress 🌈
