Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is the use of meaningful activity to promote quality of life and psychological wellbeing.

Occupational Therapy

At The Edinburgh Practice we offer Occupational Therapy services across the lifespan. Our Occupational Therapists offer assessment and support to; children, teenagers, adults and older adults.

At the core of Occupational Therapy is the use of meaningful activity to promote quality of life and psychological wellbeing. Often mental health difficulties and neurodiversity such as ASD or ADHD can impact upon a person’s ability to accomplish everyday activities in the way they would like to.

Our Occupational Therapists can support you to overcome challenges in your everyday life, by understanding what difficulties are arising and developing strategies to support you to be able to engage with the activities you choose to your fullest potential.

Our Expertise

Our Occupational Therapy team offer a range of assessments and intervention services, including, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Assessment of activities of daily living, including home adaptations and assessments for care packages
  • Cognition and memory support strategies and interventions
  • Falls assessment
  • Pacing and fatigue management
  • Rehabilitation which may include focusing on engagement in meaningful activity and assistance with routine and structure
  • Sensory assessment
  • Vocational support, including staying well at work plans and reasonable adjustments to the workplace

Sensory Assessment

The assessment typically includes 4–5 hours of Specialist Occupational Therapy and is flexible depending on individual requirements.

Core Package Includes:

 A standardised Sensory Profile assessment

• A discussion with parents/carers

• An observation session (either at home or in clinic)

• Optional: school input via a questionnaire

Report – Two Options:

1. Assessment-Focused

A comprehensive understanding of the child’s sensory profile, including:

    • In-depth interviews with parents/carers

    • Observations in school or community settings (where challenges occur)

    • Interpretation of assessment results

The report will reflect this focus and will not include detailed intervention strategies—these would be part of ongoing Occupational Therapy sessions if needed.

2. Strategy-Focused

Focus on specific sensory challenges, restrictive or repetitive behaviours, or difficulties in certain environments.

In this case, less time is spent on formal assessment, and more time is used to:

    • Develop initial strategies the family can try at home or school

    • Suggest environmental adaptations to support the child’s needs
