Find out more about Dr Fiona Wilson, Founder & Clinical Director

I wanted to develop a multidisciplinary mental health and neurodiversity centre of excellence where individuals and families could access all the support they needed under one roof. Since establishing the practice in 2017, I am proud to lead a team of highly skilled clinicians and operating to the highest clinical standards.  Our award of an exceptional grade in our 2024 Healthcare Improvement Scotland inspection was affirmation that we are providing the best possible service we can for our clients. We have worked extremely hard to create a warm, welcoming and safe environment for our clients and their families and our core values of courage, compassion, safety, integrity, and personal growth, I feel are ever present.

It can be a very difficult and complex process in deciding on which service provider to use for mental health and neurodiversity services. We are proud of our reputation and commitment to providing high quality care for our clients. We stand by our practice promise to keep things CLEAR for our clients:

  • Costs are transparent for appointment options
  • Led by Clinical Psychologists, Consultant Psychiatrists and Allied Health Professionals
  • Evidence based therapies and assessments are used which are in line with the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE)
  • Aligned with professional bodies such as Healthcare & Professionals Council (HCPC), General Medical Council (GMC) & The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges
  • Regulated by healthcare professional bodies such as Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) and Care Quality Commission (CQC)

I’m Dr Fiona Wilson, Founder and Clinical Director of The Edinburgh Practice. I wear three different hats at The Edinburgh Practice: (1) as a Clinical Psychologist working therapeutically with adults, and with a particular interest in working with elite and high performance athletes across a wide range of individual and team sports; (2) as Clinical Director, where along with my senior management team, l lead a team of 55 clinicians and administrators to deliver mental health and neurodiversity support services for clients, and (3) as business owner providing leadership, clinical oversight and strategic direction to the business.

The core values of Courage, Compassion, Safety, Integrity and Personal Growth which we embody at The Edinburgh Practice mirror my own core values and therefore it comes naturally to me to be an authentic, positive and productive business owner. It is incredibly important to me that I am visible, present and engaged in the day-to-day running of the practice so that I have oversight and confidence that my team continually make values-based decisions aligned with our company vision.

Achieving work life balance as a female entrepreneur is incredibly difficult and it takes effort and commitment as there is always something that needs to be done or focused on in the business whilst similar demands are present at home. But finding balance is essential to avoid burn-out and I am incredibly lucky to be continuously reminded of that through my therapeutic work with my clients, ensuring that I ‘practice what I preach’ regarding taking time where I can to fill up my own cup. For me, that could be going to a yoga class, going for a run, reading, or watching something light-hearted and funny on tv.

I am very lucky to have a large support network around me, both personally and professionally, whom I can reach out to for advice and support. Reminding myself that I am doing my best and that I can only take things one day at a time helps a lot. On the really tough days I remind myself of how many people I have helped through creating and building the practice and it gives me the strength I need to navigate my way through whatever challenge I’m currently facing.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts has held my top spot for 15 years now. I read it whilst on my own adventure travelling the length of Africa and it completely captivated me and was the perfect trekking companion given it’s close to 1000 pages long!
