Clinical Practice
Jon Twynham has spent over 16 years working in sports physiotherapy, combining his BSc in Sport Science (2001) and MSc in Physiotherapy (2008) with extensive experience across elite and recreational sport. As a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, he focuses on understanding each individual’s specific needs and developing practical solutions to help them reach their goals.
Jon worked with Scottish Rugby from 2008 to 2015, working with the women’s national team before moving to the Scottish Institute of Sport in 2015, where he currently serves as lead physiotherapist for swimming and triathlon. His international experience includes the Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with Team GB, the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022 with Team Scotland, the Youth Winter Olympics 2024 with Team GB, and the Youth Commonwealth Games 2017 with Team Scotland. Along side sport, Jon has always worked in private practice where he enjoys working with patients with varied needs and goals.
This high-level experience has given Jon insight into the varied challenges athletes face, from managing competition pressure to navigating complex injury recoveries. He applies this understanding to his private practice, where he works with professional athletes, recreational sports enthusiasts, and individuals with non-sports related injuries.
Jon’s approach centers on careful assessment and collaborative problem-solving. He takes time to understand not just the injury or condition, but also how it affects each person’s daily life, work, and sporting activities. This allows him to create targeted treatment plans that address immediate concerns while working toward longer-term goals, whether that’s returning to elite competition, completing a first 5K, or simply moving without pain.
His experience across different sports and injury types means he can adapt his treatment approach to suit each individual’s circumstances, combining evidence-based techniques with practical advice to help people get back to doing what they enjoy.
As an active athlete himself, Jon brings firsthand understanding to his practice. He’s a keen runner who has completed multiple marathon and half marathon events, and has competed in UK Half Ironman and Ironman competitions. His passion for adventure cycling and bike-packing has taken him through numerous long-distance self-supported events across Scotland. This personal experience with endurance sports gives him valuable insight into the physical and mental challenges his patients face.
Jon lives in Edinburgh with his wife and three boys, balancing his professional commitments with family life and his own training pursuits.
